Chinese Vaccine Factory Leaks, 6,000 People in Gansu Infected with Brucellosis Outbreak

More than 6,000 people in Lanzhou, the capital of Gansu province in northwest China, have tested positive for a bacterial disease called brucellosis, local authorities said, in an outbreak caused by a leak at a vaccine factory more than a year ago.

According to local media reports Global Times, the Chinese government has tested 55,725 residents in the city and found 6,620 of them positive for brucellosis. Earlier in September, about 3,000 people were reported to have developed brucellosis.

Brucellosis is a Brucella bacterial infectious disease that is spread from animals to humans.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Brucella contamination is generally through direct contact with infected animals, by eating or drinking contaminated animal products, or by inhaling airborne viral agents. Some symptoms can become chronic and never go away.

According to a statement from the Lanzhou health commission dated September, the outbreak originated in a biopharmaceutical plant owned by China Animal Husbandry Industry Co.

The factory used expired disinfectants from July to August 2019 to produce the brucellosis vaccine, leaving bacteria in polluted waste gas.

The contaminated waste gas then forms aerosols, which are carried by the wind to the Lanzhou Animal Research Institute, where the outbreak was first recorded in November last year, the health commission said. { detik }
